Bobby's career, as told by Millie Empey
Bob moved to Muskoka from the Ingersoll/Woodstock area around 1971. He was familiar with Muskoka because he used to visit an aunt and uncle who lived here. Before leaving Ingersoll, he worked for CARA Operations where he was head of the night shift. Upon moving to Muskoka, he obtained employment at the Skyways Restaurant on Highway #11 near the Muskoka Airport. After working a short period of time he was promoted to manager of the night shift there. I was in my last year of high school and working part time (evenings and weekends) at Skyways and that is where we met. Bob started working at the "Red & White" in Port Carling in about May of 1972, just 1 month before we got married. The owner at the time was a local businessman named John Dixon. Bob responded to his advertisement for a butcher. When Bob went for his interview, the butcher position had been filled so Mr. Dixon offered Bob a job in Produce. In September of that year (1972) Jim and Doug Myers bought the business. Very shortly thereafter it was changed to "IGA". Bob moved from produce to grocery and eventually assistant manager. Around 1992 Gary Kaddonoff and his partner, John Christie purchased the IGA from the Myers brothers. It was Bob's intention to leave the IGA when the Myers brothers sold but Jim Myers asked Bob if he would stay on with Gary and John for at least 1 year because he was so familiar with the store. He was there through the expansion to the IGA building when it was on the main street of Port Carling and, eventually, the move to the big new store. And he's been there ever since.
Just a note: Bob also became an active member of the Port Carling Volunteer Fire Department, and we commend him for that.
We will certainly miss you Bobby!!
